Uninvited

IMG 3575 Edit small 2

Uninvited dinner guest,
Forcing us to set another place,
Demanding to be the centre,
Overwhelming, centre of everything,
All focus drawn to magnetic personality,
You had always been there, hiding in the shadows,
The worm in our apple of life,
Who will you visit next?
Who will feel your hot sticky breath on their neck?
The yellowing stench, your odorous person,
Uninvited. Unplanned. Unwanted. Unstoppable.
Leave us to our simple familial pleasures,
Your place is empty now – why must you always take another?
The memory of your brutish presence,
Hanging about, loitering in our moments, sullying our lives,
Now we know your name,
Byword for unjust suffering and pitiless death.
The door latched fast, curtains drawn;
We wonder – will you come?
Will you break in on us?
Do not come. Do not knock.
For you are hated.

I will remember you – Christchurch, 22 Feb 2011

I will remember you.
Through jandal summers,
Meat pies heated and forgotten,
Through bare-footed wanderings,
I will remember you.

Your mail keeps coming,
cat meows for answers,
Rolling-over – you’€™re not there,
I vowed to never cease loving you, to keep it unbroken
I will remember you.

Frosted morning, clear days
Cathedral rubble and a thousand broken dreams,
Gravity tried to crush my love
I will remember you.

I tried to sing a waiata,
I tried to say a prayer,
The silly joke you told, the dish broken,
I rushed the words out; I spoke too quickly
I will remember you.

Through my heart won’€™t stop breaking,
My eyes run rivers, may hands won’€™t stop shaking,
And your seat is left unfilled
I will remember you.

Bridges fall apart, buildings to dust,
Many leaves tell of seasons gone.
I will remember, I will never forget You.

Ukraine

Ukraine 41

By the time you get this I’ll be gone,
They are coming, machines not men,
There’s a lull now, in an intake of breath
Before the gods of wind and war will blow,
This nameless place,
A hill by a marsh, under a tree, by a road,
You won’t find me – don’t try,
Your letter is all I have of you, folded and yellowed,
I can see your fingerprints, still,
Imagine your handwriting,In my mind I touch you, your face
Fingertips tracing your neck, ears and hair,
I have not always been so steady,
But my heart has stayed on you,
Our young would have been sweet,
You would have gently scolded, with a wink,
My body would have ached with honest toil,
Now these are my last words,
Why did they come?
Why does hate drive them like scourge?
They are coming,
Remember me.

Depression

Great depression

Look at me.
My hands are dirty but my heart is pure,
My brow is furrowed but my heart is soft.
You’re the only beautiful thing here,
Sitin’ on the roadside,
Pushed together by despair’s rough hand,
By falling together into a pit,
Endless black, hopeless – then I found you.
It found me.
Love found me.
You’re looking at all I have,
I see more than I ever dreamed.
Can I know you?
Will you accept me? Will I kiss you?
There is still something left when you go nothin’,
Love.
When stuff and nonsense has gone.
Love.Substance still stands.
Love.Sittin’, just sittin’

I Got A Letter

I got letter

I heard you’d been called away,
To fields turned mud and the poets,
The poets died, poems lived long,
You lived your life on the square,
On the up and up – no doubts,
There’s a creaking on the door,
Wakens me out of dreamy state,
Postman’s got a letter, here’ some news,Its about poets dying,
The cost of lands rising,
Used to be you’d buy it plain, outright,
Now it cost 60,000 boys, called men,
I got a letter,
I’m needed to lean against the onslaught,
One more or less what is the difference?
The poets died and I got a letter,
Well at least there won’t be another.

White knuckle ride

White-knuckle ride,
White-knuckle ride,

I’m going to the place where nothing survives,
Where no one dies because no one lives,
Helter skelter, jump on 10,
Slingshot wonder, hearts racing again,
Slide-rule party – duct tape wonder,
It’s a mission not job,
Interplanetary evangelism,
Reaching-out hands to the invisible,
And the ride never ends,

What goes-up should come now,
3 men, a dinghy and some junk,
3 nights in the belly of the whale,
Come-out the way they want it,
And the canary died, lights went out,
Light the touch-paper – stand well clear,
Simple as a needle, sharp as a tack,
Rock and roll lifestyle, shaken not stirred,
Billion-dollar candle.
You can see it from space,
Take it away and bring me another,
But this is beautiful and I wonder that we broke it,
White-knuckle ride,
White-knuckle ride.
