Stained Wonder

Don’t you love the way light comes streaming through windows?  The best of all is when the windows are stained glassed.  The light brings stories to life; in times gone by they may have been the only things of beauty in their life.  Think of labours and farm workers, unable to read or write but yet once a week they could gaze-up on these poetic paintings.

Using a three exposures, set at -2/0/+2 helped me to capture the range from dark to light.  Then processed with Photomatix and into Photoshop for finishing.

Brilliant Sunset

Another brilliant sunset! This was a 3 exposure captured using the great Canon 7D DSLR. I exposed it for the highlights and this allowed me to save as much detail as possible in the shadow areas. The shadows are where most of the noise is as well, so its important to process these through something like Noiseware to cleanup before the HDR process.

There is some debate on whether noise reduction should happen before or after. As this was a pretty dark image taken at higher than ISO 100, I processed each RAW out as JPEG and then ran these through Noiseware before loading into HDR Efex Pro. Once a tonemapped image was produced it was back into Photoshop to recover any detail (using masking from each of the 3 base photos).

Finally, I really like the amazing array of landscape tweaks that PhotoTools 2.5 offers; you can very quickly layer multiple effects to bring back some life into an otherwise flat tonemapped image.
